a common novelty.. a product in and of themselves, capable of selling items that consumers either were already interested in-- or would become interested in through vivid imagery and detail descriptions. Lands End was, of course, one of the first in the original school of catalog sales outlets who found the business to be both highly-profitable and continually growing. But by 1989, not only had the market been saturated,-- public interest began to decline, department stores grew more assertive in their own price advertising, and an almost countless number of new players entered the field of catalog sales-- some giving it an inherently bad name. Several macro-economic factors beyond the companys immediate control have also threatened its continued growth from time to time and these must be considered in any attempt to determine recommended solutions for the restoration of Lands Ends continued growth. For example, the issue of enforcing the collection of sales tax on items sold through the mail adversely impacts one of the consumers primary reasons for buying. If there is no tax incentive to purchase items from out-of-state firms to save money, the public is less likely to see any significant "pluses" in ordering from catalogs. As another example, if the price of postage is to rise more quickly than inflation & wages, people are less apt to be willing to pay augmented rates for shipping and companies like Lands End will ultimately be losing out. The idea of taking an innovative step to "pitch in" for postage may be considered in our marketing efforts but sufficient analysis needs to be done to figure out hoe feasible such a program would be against the backdrop of already-diminishing profit margins.
