yet only accounts for about 1% of the total waste produced each year as industrial and manufacturing waste contributes to well over half (Earth Explorer, 1995). As waste continues to
build across the country, Americans have traditionally used four methods to try and get rid of it. Dumping was the most common form of getting rid of waste and as
dumps were retired or filled, they were covered over and used as possible sites for golf courses, parks and ski hills to name a few. Burning is another possible method
to get rid of the waste and in the U.S. there are over 140 incinerators or combustors used to convert waste-to-energy (WTE) to produce electricity (Earth Explorer, 1995). There are
several issues involved with incinerators because of their obvious pollution levels. The third method for the disposal of waste is the landfill process. When built and used properly it is
the use of the landfill process which hopes to convert methane gas into energy and slowly turn the garbage into compost for future use. Lastly, manufacturers have recently begun to
make a concerted effort to reduce the amount of packaging used in their products and to increase the number of recyclable items available and provide incentives to recycle these materials.
Despite this effort, Americans still only recycle about 17% of their household waste therefore making themselves more dependent on the options used for dumping or sending the waste to landfills
(Earth Explorer, 1995). There are several types of landfills currently used today. A basic landfill site sits on top of the ground or is built slightly into the ground and
is separated from the surrounding environment by a bottom layer and a daily application of soil. Sanitary landfills use a clay liner to isolate the waste from the environment which
