as he was adopted by his stepfather, Terry Armstrong ("Lance Armstrong"). Raised by his mother Linda in a suburb of Dallas, he was an active child and began competing in
cycling races at the age of 10. By 13, he was competing in triathlons, that is, races that "combine a 1,000 meter swim, 15-mile bike ride, and three-mile run" ("Lance
Armstrong Biography"). At 16, he was a professional triathlete, as he was the "national sprint-course, triathlon champion in 1989 and 1990" ("Lance Armstrong Biography"). However, by the time he was
a senior in high school, Armstrong was focusing on his favorite sport, cycling, and the U.S. Olympic development team invited him to train with them at their Colorado Springs, Colorado
facility ("Lance Armstrong Biography"). Armstrong left school temporarily in order to take advantage of this opportunity and later completed his high school education by taking private classes, receiving his
diploma in 1989 ("Lance Armstrong Biography"). Soon afterward, he qualified for inclusion on the 1990 junior world team and placed 11th in the World Championship Road Race, coming in with
the best time for any American since 1976 ("Lance Armstrong Biography"). Also during 1990, Armstrong became the U.S. amateur champion. He turned pro after the Olympics, joining the Motorola cycling
