Pathophysiology Review Lamisil is the trade name of the generic drug terbinafine HCl; it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 and is described as "a topical anti-fungal to treat ringworm and conditions like athletes foot" (Drug review, 1999). Lamisil can be obtained as an over-the-counter, non-prescription medication though in certain forms it is only available by prescription. There are several types of fungal infections for which Lamisil (terbinafine) might be prescribed: it is applied directly to the skin in cases of "ringworm of the body (tinea corporis); ringworm of the foot (interdigital and plantar tinea pedis; athletes foot); ringworm of the groin (tinea cruris; jock itch); tinea versicolor (sometimes called sun fungus); and yeast infection of the skin (cutaneous candidiasis)" (Terbinafine (topical), 2005). A prescription is necessary to obtain terbinafine in the form of a topical cream in the U.S. and Canada; and in a pump spray solution in the U.S. (Terbinafine (topical), 2005). In most cases, terbinafine will be used as a topical preparation first, and if that is unsuccessful, a systemic approach (via oral tablets) will be prescribed (Terbinafine hydrochloride, 2005). Terbinafine is an anti-fungal agent, designed to kill the fungal spores; in cases of toenail fungus, for which Lamisil seems to be prescribed frequently, these live under the nail, making them difficult to kill. This is the function of this drug, which is a fungicide ("cide" being the suffix meaning "to kill"); this is not a wound to be healed or a surgical procedure to be performed.
