It was not always called Lakewood. It would be dubbed Lakewood in March of 1880 ("History of Lakewood," 2007). It was an up and coming area with some affluence by
that time. In fact, even the mere creation of the name was controversial as it was thought that Lakewood could really amount to a place of prominence. The naming of
the town is explained as follows: " Because the name of the town did not suit the visions its promoters had for it, Samuel D. Davis suggested the name "Brightwood."
Erastus Dickinson suggested "Lakewood" and the Times and Journal conducted a house-to-house canvass of the citizens, who voted for "Lakewood" by a large majority" ("History of Lakewood," 2007). From
the early part of the twentieth century, many well known people, particularly associated with sports or entertainment, would work and train in Lakewood ("History of Lakewood," 2007). For example, the
Laurel in the Pines Hotel had been the scene of Charles Evans Hughes realization that he had lost the presidential election ("History of Lakewood," 2007). Rudyard Kipling and Oliver Wendell
Holmes would recite poetry in the Laurel House ("History of Lakewood," 2007). Richard Dix would star in a film which was set in Lakewood, New Jersey ("History of Lakewood," 2007).
Lakewood had slowly but surely become known as a resort area ("History of Lakewood," 2007). Again, the region would rise in prominence due to attention to entertainment. It attracted well
known people, including many entertainers. The Strand Theater is a primary landmark in Lakewood. The theater, designed by Thomas Lamb, would open in 1922 ("Lakewood Township: Quality of Life,"
2007). The first event at the theater was actually a film called Peacock Alley ("Strand Theater," 2007). The film was followed by several vaudeville acts ("Strand Theater," 2007). In addition
