The writer argues that unlike many Western travelers in Turkey at this time, Lady Montagu exhibits the intelligence and discernment to recognize where accounts by other Westerners have erred; to recognize where Turkish culture deserves praise; and, most importantly, to recognize where a Turkish custom--specifically, the folk remedy for smallpox--should be acknowledged as superior to treatment in England for this malady and adopted by the English.
