Shakespeare fashions the character of Lady Macbeth as antithetical to the standard gender expectations of Western society, which envisions women as nurturing mothers and helpmates. Rather than being solely concerned with the domestic sphere, Lady Macbeth indicates that she is just as ambitious as her husband, if not more so. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth is much more ruthless in her ambition than is her husband, as it is Lady Macbeth that formulates the plan to murder Duncan and it is also Lady Macbeth who goads her husband into committing the deed. Lady Macbeth must have been shocking to Elizabethan audiences, and continues to be so, because of her cold-blooded, ruthless ambition, which will stop at nothing, even murder, to achieve her goals. On receiving the letter relating how the witches halted him as a future king, Lady Macbeth ponders her husbands characters, saying that he is "too full o the milk of human kindness/To catch the nearest way," in other words, she reasons that her husband is too kind to promote his way to high station by taking the most expeditious route, i.e., murder (I.5.4-5). She also perceives that her husband is ambitious. She resolves her self to "pour my spirits in thine ear,/And chastise with the valour of my tongue" (I.5.13-14), that is, she will nag him, until he capitulates to her ideas as to how best to make the witches prediction come about.
