Christened Claudia Alta Taylor. When just a small child, however, Claudia was given the nickname of "Lady Bird", the nickname that followed her into her adult life and into
the Whitehouse itself. Lady Bird, after all, was destined to become the First Lady of the United States. That was hardly her only accomplishment, however. Not only
does she hold a Bachelors Degree in arts and journalism, Ladybird Johnson is remembered for her continuing dedication to a number of important humanitarian and environmental causes.
Lady Bird was born to wealthy parents Minnie Pattillo Taylor and Thomas Jefferson Taylor on December 22, 1912 near Karnack Texas. When she was five
her mother died and her care was in the hands of her father, her aunt (Effie Pattillo), and family servants. One of those servants, a nursemaid, observed that the
she was "as purty as a lady bird" and that spawned the name the young girl would become known as among her family and friends (Lady Bird Johnsons Biography, 2007).
When Lady Bird was twenty-two she met the man that would soon become her husband. That man, of course, was
Lyndon B. Johnson. They were married less than a year after they met and she began the uphill climb alongside a husband that ultimately became the thirty-sixth President of
the United States. Prior to serving as President Johnson had served in the Senate and had considerable skill in the legislative process (Byrd, 1991). When Lady Bird met
LBJ, however, he was only a Congressional Secretary. LBJ had high ambitions, however, and Lady Bird was always at his side helping him accomplish his goals.
