"Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning." His announcement had little apparent effect on the people who were there to watch the game. This paper discusses the book and whether
or not it actually illustrates the transitions New York City was undergoing in 1977. Discussion The book is ingenious but parts of it are much stronger than others. When Mahler
starts discussing politics, in particular that Abe Beame administration that followed John Lindsay, it seems forced, as if his heart isnt in it but he felt he had to include
the mayoral goings-on because the Mayor of New York is such an important political figure. Also theres no doubt that the change in administration is a transitional point for any
city, but again, its not much fun. But when Mahler starts writing about baseball, he hits a home run. (Sorry, couldnt resist.) He captures the quirky personality of Billy Martin,
the feisty, hot-tempered Italian who rose to become the Yankees manager perfectly. The chapter in which Mahler details Martins career, first as a player and then bouncing around from team
to team until he finally ends up managing the Yankees, is so vivid it nearly jumps off the page. We meet Martin when hes a scrappy second baseman just traded
to the Yankees from the Oakland Oaks. He asks the managers incessant questions and yells from the dugout; in short, he manages to get himself into the starting lineup (Mahler,
2005). He plays with the kind of intensity that has turned up in countless baseball movies, about how the game takes over until it means more than anything else in
the players life. For Martin, that is absolutely true. Hes obsessed with baseball. When he plays, hes out to win at any cost: "He tagged runners so they stayed tagged,
