determination and education were in the fight against slavery. Douglass was a man who, at a relatively early age, was lucky enough to be taught his alphabet and some reading,
giving him a passion for learning that would ultimately lead to his gaining his freedom. The following paper examines his story as it illustrates how education, or a lack of
education, is one of the primary reasons slavery continued as long as it did. Through denying the slaves any kind of education they were kept under control as they had
no knowledge of anything else. Lack of Education and the Slave System It is relatively early on in Douglass life that
the reader sees how important education is, and how it was considered very dangerous by white slave owners as it related to the slaves. Douglass indicates how with one new
master the wife of the master taught him the alphabet and then she taught him 3 and 4 letter words. But, this exciting new world of education would not last.
This woman had never owned slaves and did not know it was wrong to teach them. Her husband discovered what she was doing: "[A]t once forbade Mrs. Auld to
instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read. To use his own words, further, he said,
If you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell. A nigger should know nothing but to obey his master-to do as he is told to do. Learning
