is not only the shop floor staff that are necessary to the UK retail industry, but al those along the supply chain, as it is the demand at the end
of the supply chain that provides all of these jobs, and issues on the labour supply impact on the price and available of the goods sold by the retail industry.
One issue in the labour market that is impacting on all retailer directly and indirectly are the recent changes in the minim wage, not only for those over 18,
but also with the introduction of a minimum wage for employees that are 16 and 17 years of age. The retail industry is estimated to have some of the lowest
paid employees. In 1998 24% of the lowest 1.9 - 2.4 million workers were in this industry (Wilkinson, 1998). However there is little many employers can do about this it
is a legal requirement. However there have been some differences in the way this has been adopted. When first introduced in April 1999 many companies, such as Iceland and Sainsburys
had already brought in the policy rather than leaving it until the last minuet. The same pattern is seen with many retailers, such as Sainsburys, but with other employers, such
as the Dixons Group, this is left until the last possible moment when the pay of employees under this limit will only be increased in the month of the change.
This impacts not only with the shop floor staff but all areas of the company. The issue of skills and knowledge is also a difficulty for the retail industry.
