rural areas to more urban areas, generally within cities, in order to find work. This was a result of the Industrial Revolution which brought new ways in which to manufacture
goods. People who lived in rural areas and used to be able to make their living off the land found that such a lifestyle was often not providing enough because
the cities were making things far cheaper than they could. People had little choice, in many cases, but to move to cities and seek a living there. The following paper
examines this reality and discusses how labor changed and how the rights and power of laborers changed in the 19th century. Labor in the 19th Century At the beginning
of the 19th century people, as mentioned, often had little choice but to move to cities and do whatever they could to make a living. They essentially had no rights
at all. The big businesses that controlled the commercial world, the industrial world, knew that a worker could be had for almost a dime a dozen. So, if someone did
not like any of the working conditions they could easily be replaced. As such laborers had no rights and did whatever they could, in conditions that were less than safe.
Workers included men, women and children. The fact that children worked in incredibly dangerous situations and conditions further indicates that the laborers had no rights, no power, in the face
of necessity. They had to make a living in order to survive and the commercial industrialized owners knew this full well. Things slowly began to change, however, beginning perhaps
in the middle of the 19th century. For example, many groups, predominantly led by women, worked to ensure children were protected from such conditions, starting the ball rolling on child
