and institutions of almost immeasurable proportions. In virtually every industry, unions served as a means through which the concerns and rights of workers could be addressed and acted upon. The
airline industry, like most other enterprises, has numerous components that make up their whole. Obviously, any airline is made up of people trained in very unique skills. From the pilots
to the ground crews, highly specialized skills are required of every individual. The relationship between unions and the airlines has often relied on a certain measure of mutual dependence and
the fact that one group relies on the other for its very existence. The U.S. Airline Industry Events that have occurred since deregulation of the airlines in 1978 have
shifted the ways in which nearly every aspect of the airline industry operates. For example, with the three largest carriers in the U.S. (American, United, and US Airways) announcing that

yank down their costs by a total of $5.5 billion a year" (pp. 56). But the writer then notes that while this may have helped these three airlines, they have
a new problem in that: "Now, management must reach out to rank-and-file workers, who have been demoralized by their immense sacrifices" (pp. 56). The student researching airline employees unions may

Northwest, and Continental Airlines represent some of Americas most powerful transportation companies. Of the four, Delta has had the highest profile in terms of its relationship with its pilots union.
