used with positive pressure when assisted ventilation is necessitated (Hansmann, 2004). However, 100 percent oxygen is known to exacerbate reperfusion injury in animals and also reduces cerebral perfusion in newborns
(Davis, et al, 2004). Therefore, Davis, et al (2004) conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of all studies that compared resuscitation with air versus resuscitation with 100 percent oxygen in
order to determine the efficacy of the policy of 100 percent oxygen resuscitation. Five studies fulfilled the researchers criteria. While none of the studies showed a difference in mortality
rates between air and 100 percent oxygen resuscitation, the analysis revealed a statistically significant benefit for the infants resuscitated with air. This finding led the research team to conclude
that air should be initially used for resuscitation, with oxygen as a backup if the initial resuscitation fails (Davis, et al, 2004). According to Hansmann, the "evidence for
mortality reduction with air is striking and will have widespread impact on the management and outcome of depressed newborn infants" (Hansmann, 2004, p. 1293). Analgesic use and newborns : The
student researching this topic may find it useful to specifically address the circumstances pertaining to the analgesic use, such as the pain produced by newborn circumcision. While this procedure is
frequently performed without the use of analgesia, a significant body of research has been accumulated in recent years that demonstrates that newborns experience "measurable physiologic and emotional pain responses to
painful procedures," such as circumcision (Razmus, Dalton and Wilson, 2004, p. 414). Four main types of analgesia are used in regards to circumcision: administration of oral concentrated sucrose, topical anesthetic,
ring block and dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) (Razmus, Dalton and Wilson, 2004). Concentrated oral sucrose has garnered considerable attention as a pain management intervention for neonates during both heel
