thing of ours." La Cosa Nostra (LCN) refers to a alliance of criminals, who share ties of blood and affiliation through conspiracy, that is nationwide in its membership. Also known
in popular American culture as the "Mafia," LCN consists of different "families or groups" that control a specific region in regards to organized racketeering (FBI, 2008). While LCN is primarily
active in the "New York metropolitan area, parts of New Jersey, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago and New England," it is known to have members in other major American cities and also
to be involved in international criminal activities (FBI, 2008). LCNs roots are in Italian organized crime, but it has been separate from its European counterpart for a long time. Nevertheless,
LCN is also known to cooperate in criminal activities that originate with criminal groups based in Italy (FBI, 2008). The first known member of the Sicilian Mafia to come
to the US was Giuseppe Esposito, which occurred when he and six of his companions came to New York after assassinating the "chancellor and a vice chancellor of a Sicilian
province, " as well as eleven affluent landowners (FBI, 2008). He was taken into federal custody in New Orleans in 1881 and sent back to Italy. On October 15, 1890,
a superintendent of the New Orleans police force was murdered in an execution-like manner that was indicative of Mafia involvement. While hundreds were arrested and 19 Sicilians were eventually indicted
