the painting reminds me of the street where I grew up as a child gives it a sense of my own human experience during a very meaningful time in my
life. The light-hearted and animated composition gives a happy feeling of home where the street was a meeting place for the whole neighborhood; these days, people are too afraid
to come out of their homes for fear of violence. It was not that way when I was growing up where the street represented camaraderie and friendship. The
vivid colors are welcoming and depict the vibrant people who live both in the painting and in my childhood neighborhood. The social (clean community), cultural (beautiful architecture) and moral
(manners) values the work expresses speaks to a place anyone would want to call home. "La Calle" illustrates how art is a language
unto itself that speaks to the communal need for expression. Everyone -- no matter their origin or language -- has an inherent desire to express emotions and to have
those expressions understood. Botero understands how the universality of art removes the barriers that expose its foundation of truth. The mere fact of the human element being the
primary force behind creating a particular work of art is enough of a connection to render any barrier obsolete; only when the restrictive aspect of speech is introduced into the
