II. LSD: A History and Overview LSD, or lysergic acid diethylamide, is probably the most well-known and most potent hallucinogen. The drug is produced from lysergic acid, a
substance derived from the ergot fungus that grows on rye, or from lysergic acid amide, a chemical found in morning glory seeds(L.A.W.Publications). Known by many as a "psychedelic drug",
LSD was first discovered on April 19,1943, by Swiss scientist Dr. Albert Hofmann. Dr. Hofmann had no idea the future impact his actions would have that afternoon over half
a century ago, when he conducted his experiment. He carried out a self-experiment with 0.25 mg of a semisynthetic ergot derivative that he had initially prepared in 1938.
As accustomed as he was to his tradition of self-experimentation, he had no idea that just over 20 years later, that sort of experimentation would earned him massive criticism
and punishment, or that it would eventually, at least in one country, be considered the most serious of all criminal behavior (Nichols). His experiment involved the isolation of psilocybin from
an extract of psilocybe mexicana mushrooms. The final separation and identification of the active principle was achieved by the use of paper chromatography. This involved he and several
