film, Lost in Translation, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Capturing a slice of life in downtown Tokyo, Coppola was able to bring the lost soul in everyone to the
point of realization. It is no wonder that it was a sound success. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are two visitors in Tokyo who are staying at the same hotel.
Bored and unwilling to tackle the streets of Tokyo alone, they strike up a conversation with each other. They discuss everything from their marriages to the meaning of life. It
is Tokyo that brings them together, the setting that isolates and creates intimacy at the same time. This movie would not have worked had it been set in Iowa or
New Jersey. Granted, isolation can happen anywhere, but with the added problems of language barriers in a strange country with even stranger customs, the isolation is increased. Both Bob
and Charlotte are two people who have no one. The idea both liberates and frightens them a great deal. When they meet it is as if they are kindred souls
in a lonely dance and so very happy that at least someone cares. Early in the movie there is a very real lost in translation bit. Bob is in the
middle of filming the commercial he has come to do and the director is attempting to give him directions in Japanese using an interpreter. The interpreter invariably gets it wrong
setting Bill Murray up to try to understand the directors instructions. Though it is hilarious, what it points out is that Bob has a problem with communicating. He obviously cannot
communicate with his family and on a deeper level cannot be honest with himself. And, yet, here is Charlotte, someone that he is able to open up to and communicate
