process of getting a product from point A (the manufacturing plant) to point B (the market), is called logistics. Logistical chains can be short or impossibly long, but they all
rely on one thing -- that is transportation carriers. When we talk about "transport carriers," we refer mostly to trucks and trucking
companies; though when it comes to logistics, the "carrier" definition can certainly refer to other methods of transport as well (rail, air and water are the most frequent).
But even within the "carrier" definition, there are a variety of different ones from which to consider. These include, but arent limited to, the common
carrier, contract carrier, exempt carrier and private carrier. In the following paper, well define each of these and provide examples. Common carrier. This
is defined as a company that transports goods and property for revenue at any time, and at any place within its operating authority/prevue, and without discrimination (AMA, 2008). A common
carrier can conduct transportation-for-hire transport services after receiving certification as "fit, willing and able" (AMA, 2008). Common carriers typically have regular schedules, most often a daily pick-up or drop-off point.
Common carriers, as can be assumed, will transport just about anything (with the possible exception of extremely hazardous materials). Typical common carriers would
