encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places(Menken 2000).
The hit Broadway musical by Alan Menken and Frank Oz brought songs that sizzled and puppets that thrilled. But more than movie goers, or theater audiences realized, Little Shop of
Horrors illustrated some of the most difficult of moral and ethical dilemmas. Mr. Mushnick and Seymour, as well as Audrey, are examples of greed run amuck, and show that skewed
perspectives on what really matters lead to devastating consequences. The original movie, released in 1960, had a very different ending than the Menken movie-musical, however the dilemmas remained the
same. Seymour Krelbourn is a down and out young man living on skid row. He is employed by Mr. Mushnick in a flower shop where he is a janitor. Seymour
shortly shows that he is inept and clumsy. A bumbler, the audience learns that Seymour has a history of breaking things, or forgetting things, which have added to the lack
of business in the store. In short, Mr. Mushnick can no longer afford to keep his doors open. After yet another incident with Seymour, he states that Seymour is fired.
Circumstances come to a crossroads for Seymour when he discovers an odd looking plant after a total eclipse of
the sun. He elects to bring the plant into the flower shop. Mr. Mushnick shares with both Audrey and Seymour that he is closing the shop permanently. Seymour shows Mushnick
the plant and Mushnick agrees to let Seymour keep the plant if he can spruce it up some. Blood spruces it up.
