from Homers Iliad and Odyssey. There really are no new plotlines, it can be said, and so, many great writers have taken the basic premise from classical stories and added
that one thing that is unique to each individual: their writers voice. Thus, it can be said that Gloria Naylor removed the bare bones structure for Linden Hills from Dantes
Inferno, and in doing so, made Linden Hills a hellish place. But what exactly is the definition of hellish? Some would state that it is a place where things happen
to a person that is out of their control or ability to foresee. This bad place can bring pain of the physical, emotional and spiritual varieties and can manifest itself
in many ways, through many characters, and in many situations. At its root, hell, is an unhappy place to be. So, is Linden Hills. The insidious part of it all
is that on the outside Linden Hills seems like it would be an okay place, initially. The characters feel as if they are in control of their own destinies, but
that is the catch. Having pursued fortune and power they have built it a foundation which is beginning to leach away from under them. They have attained their goals but
at the sacrifice of those things that really matter the most: heart and soul. Linden Hills is an African American middle-class neighborhood which for all intrinsic purposes is patterned after
the circular structure of Dantes hell. The story revolves around two poets who come into the town looking for work shortly before Christmas time. While there, they discover the undercurrent
of paranoia and the moral bankruptcy of the inhabitants who have gained the world, but have lost their cultural and spiritual souls. In Dantes Hell there are nine circles
