Both of their works show the impact of their own beliefs, motives and actions as represented in their artwork. Kathe Kollwitz burst onto the scene by shaking up the
art world. Her depictions of motherhood struck a raw nerve with many. Though each of her subjects shows a type of inner nobility they are not the lovely women shown
in earlier works by other artists. Kollwitzs mothers are desperate and poor. They struggle against brutal conditions and are unable to meet the needs of their children. She gives a
voice to those who are often overlooked by society. Her work shows her strong commitment to social concerns and social activism on behalf of the poor women. Her work is
often very dark and shows the uglier side of society. If one places her in the time in which she grew up, then it is easy to see that she
may have been influenced by Max Klinger and the writing of Zola(Kathe Kollwitz, 2003). Images of death, destruction and violence are constant themes in her work. Lithography as well
as sculptures are her preferred media, though it would seem that her choice depends more on the subject matter at hand. Since she is from Germany and lost many of
her family members to both World Wars, her view of life is necessarily influenced by the horrors that she experienced first hand. Though she was elected to the Prussian Academy(the
first woman to do so), she was later expelled by the Nazi regime because they found her themes to be too disturbing for the emerging nationalist movement. As such, too,
her political leanings did not make her a favorite of the Reich. Her home was bombed and she did not exhibit at all during this time(Gentileschi 2003). Another female
