who wrote "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong," an element of controversy has been brought into U.S. history courses, while Loewens work itself has
stirred up some controversy. The theme of the book is summed up practically at the beginning, in the dedication pages: "Dedicated to
all American history teachers who teach against their textbooks (and their ranks are growing)." The other theme of the book is that U.S. history is boring for a reason: Because
of its textbooks. Loewen has backed up this assertion by studying anywhere from six to 12 U.S. history books (depending on what version
of "Lies" youre reading), and from those readings came up with the following aspects: History, as presented in these textbooks, is scrubbed too
clean, is very much Eurocentric and is "too neat and rosy" as one reader put it. The history textbooks dismiss and/or marginalize people
of color, especially African American, Native American and Latino Students, giving these minority groups even more reason to dislike the course. Though many
Americans like history, they dislike their history classes with a passion. Too much of what is considered "fact" in history books (such
as the first Thanksgiving), is nothing more than legend or myth. For one thing, whites werent the first "settlers" on Plymouth Rock; Spaniards and Native Americans were (Loewen). The Spaniards,
in fact, introduced horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and words such as mustang, rodeo and lariat to the cowboy lingo. Yet its white Puritans that get the nod as being the
