Convention met in August 5th of this year and voted to confirm as bishop a practicing gay priest, the denomination hit critical mass. What this served to do, and whose
far ranging effects went beyond denomination, was to place the issue of progress before every church body for definition. At what point do the conservative and liberal factions of a
denomination reach a balance? In a New York Post article, October edition, George F. Will profiled the ongoing battle between the conservative and progressive factions within the Episcopalian Church.
What came of this analysis pointed out at least three issues at hand. First, how was the Episcopal Church going to gain new members? By their own admission they had
been losing members at a drastic rate. In comparison to other denominations they were at the bottom of the list for growth, converts and mission projects. In order to try
and turn this tide of events around they had decided that it was time for a revamping of many of the outdated modes of operation. The liberals suggested that women
be ordained and that the prayer books be updated(Will 2003). This worked in some respects, but obviously it was not enough. Something more needed to be done. Secondly, one of
the major issues that this article pointed out was the strong armed tactics of many of the Western liberals and the effect that they are attempting to ply on Episcopalians
around the globe. For example, Will points out that there are battleground Christians who struggle on a daily basis against militant religions such as Islam in Africa. As such, these
new liberal laws do not work for them, nor does coercion, or strong armed tactics. Many of the missionaries and small established churches are conservative by nature. The pressure from
