of Lehman Brothers, this was no fly-by-night firm. It had been around for a century and a half, helping to expand the United States by underwriting railroad expansion, and setting
up commodities exchanges. Lehman Brothers had experienced the financial panics of the late 19th century, the Great Depression of the 1930s and the recessions following. It was thought to have
been invincible. But a series of factors helped crumble this large institution. These days, its assets are part of Barclays of London, and
the institution itself is considered by many to be the One that the Government Didnt Bail out. History Though Lehman Brothers collapsed
as a huge financial institution, its beginnings were much more humble. In 1844, Henry Lehman immigrated from Germany to Montgomery, AL, and established a dry goods and grocery store there,
which served the local cotton farmers (History of Lehman Brothers, 2009). Less than 10 years later, Henrys brothers Emanuel and Mayer joined him in Montgomery, the the firm was named
Lehman Brothers (History of Lehman Brothers, 2009). And soon after its founding, Lehman Brothers went from a general merchandising store to a commodities broker (History of Lehman Brothers, 2009). The
commodity in question was cotton, and Lehman Brothers served the planters that lived in and around Montgomery (History of Lehman Brothers, 2009). The
