government will need to realize, as John Stuart Mill did so many decades before, that legislating morality never works, and therefore drugs should be legalized. The question that seems
to arise time and again around the drug controversy, is whether or not a person should be free to make up their own mind whether they take drugs or not,
or should the community do its best to protect people from the danger of drugs? John Stuart Mills, whose ideas on personal freedoms and definitions of liberty are still used
and studied world wide, would seem to believe that it is not the communitys responsibility to save mankind from himself. He would have agreed to the legalization of drugs based
on the idea, one might argue, that if one does not make legal drugs, which may effect the body adversely and addictively, then conversely there are a great deal many
things that would also have to be outlawed, such as alcohol, prostitution, euthanasia, and over eating, to name a few destructive and addictive substances and practices. One of the prevailing
arguments these days is that one would not want a physician operating on one when the physician is using marijuana on his off hours. First of all, the recreational use
of marijuana does not seem to be any more addictive or physically debilitating as drinking several glasses of bourbon of an evening. Neither are good for a body, yet one
is legal and the other is not. One has to ask oneself whether one wants a physician operating when theyve been drinking the night before, too. Yet, it can be
