whether the so-called "right to die" movement is considered death with dignity or murder. Though right to die cases have made media
headlines during the past 30 to 40 years (beginning with Karen Ann Quinlan), the controversy over when its okay to allow someone to die is a controversy thats more than
2,000 years old (Whiting, 2001). Its been during the past 100 years, however, that the controversy of an individuals right to terminate his/her own life due to lack of quality
of life has arisen (Whiting, 2001). Much of this has come about because of the technology available to keep even those in a vegetative state alive. There are those, as
well, who believe that the right to die falls under the issues of personal choice, free expression and individual liberties (Whiting, 2001; see also Jacoby, 1980).
Because the issues are so polarized, Whiting and others point out that the judicial systems are under growing pressure to rule on an individuals right to
die, meaning legal scholars are being forced to "reconsider old definitions about what constitutes suicide, how to treat issues of assisted suicide, and how to reconcile the ethical dilemmas posed
by such questions" (Whiting, 2001, p. 16). Despite the historic struggles between what constitutes natural death vs. suicide, Karen Ann Quinlan became
