atmosphere, to give but one small example. However, the scope of such laws is not sufficient to bring about the total universal shift towards environmentally sustainable practices that is required.
Moreover, one would prefer that such standards be adopted voluntarily, on the basis of their fundamental importance to the future survival of the species. Whatever the case, many organizations may
wish to engage in such sustainable practices, but have little idea about how to effectively do so. As many of these practices are still in their fledgling states of development,
it has been important for governing bodies to issue standards for what constitutes "green" behavior, not to place restrictions upon the subject, but to provide helpful guidelines and tips that
organizations can utilize to meaningful adopt sustainable standards. One such governing body, for example, is the US Green Building Council, which promotes a set of standards for green building practices
through its issuing of LEED certification. Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC, the first institution of its type to be awarded a high level of LEED certification in the country,
provides an excellent example of these standards in action. This paragraph helps the student begin to examine what the LEED standards are all
about. LEED, which stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" is a body of regulatory standards that purports to provide a measurement of how effectively a building adheres to
