would be "okay, sir -- how high?" This was the classical leadership theory, it was very top-down and it was accepted, for nearly half a century, as the way to
run a corporation. However, during the middle of the 20th century, things began to change a little. Leadership theories and how to
better understand workers to motivate them became a specific theme. As a result, there have been a variety of leadership theories to help people who are in charge to better
motivate their workforce. In this paper, the student wants to apply four types of theories -- contingency, situational approach, leader-member exchange and
transformational -- in her job as an office manager. In response, well discuss each theory, evaluate each theory and determine their effectiveness.
Before we begin, however, there are some assumptions that need to be made. We dont know, exactly, what types of employees the student supervises (nor do we know how many).
We dont know, either, what the job descriptions are. But for purposes of this paper, well note that the student likely supervises administrative employees and support staff, such as secretaries,
executive assistants and mail room employees. Also, lets examine the definition of leader -- in its most basic sense, leaders are individuals
within either work or social groups that exert the "the most influence on other group members" (Ding, 2001). The leader basically directs and influences, while the group follows.
