Lets focus on the differences first. Goldsmiths approach is more practical, more organization-centered, more external. His belief is that leadership requires a
certain number of external traits (such as the ability to encourage passion in others, help the abilities of others, provide the framework for others to grow and so on). Baileys
perspective, however, is more internal, more spiritual. Goldsmiths belief seems to be that a leaders needs to develop external qualities to lead effectively, while Bailey stresses internal development for effective
leadership. But beneath the surface, these authors are more alike. They both agree that leadership has changed during the latter part of the
20th century. Both acknowledge the necessity of connection between leader and subordinate for success. And both comment that a good leader needs to walk the talk if he/she hopes to
have any respect and response from employees. Finally, both authors agree that interpretation is a huge part of leadership - how leaders interact with their surroundings is a key
to success. This is an aspect that authors Rooke and Torbert (2005) introduced some years ago, is the concept of "action logic," in other words, how they react when power
and safety is challenged, and how they react if their surroundings change. If we were going to classify each of these leadership
