is but a small part of the legacy that is hockey coach, Herb Brooks. Part of what has made Brooks one of the most in demand coaches (worldwide) is his
unique coaching style. His leadership ideas; his traits, personality, motives and behaviors are a winning combination, and are THE combination which brought the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team gold medals
and earned for them the title: Miracle on Ice. But, if you ask Coach Brooks he will tell you that he doesnt believe in miracles; he believes in hard
work. One of his principles seems to be that of working toward a higher goal, that of a personal best for each player. In this respect, then, the focus is
shifted from that of an adversarial role to that of competing to perfect ones own skills. The tougher the team, the better opportunity to move ones own skill a notch
higher. "Coach Brooks (has) got such a great positive attitude," said Hull. "He really makes you have such enthusiasm for the challenge ahead of us"( Guregian, see also Schultz
E19, Schultz D41). Brooks style was to utilize a four-line attack that had a combination of power coupled with finesse. And, each line had its own power forward sandwiched in
with players that were aggressive players and had scoring capability. This was a type of puck-possession style, too, which basically meant that they got the puck, they kept the puck
and they scored with the puck(Gordon 01a). A tough disciplinarian, Brooks was also an excellent organizer and motivator. Entering the 1980 Olympic hockey tournament, Brooks told his team, "Youre meant
to be here. This moment is yours. Youre meant to be here at this time"(Campbell). The team upset the Soviet Union 4-3 and beat Finland 4-2 in its final
