are castigated. But what, exactly, is leadership? Most definitions of leadership point out that its a
process of influencing the behavior, attitudes and/or actions of others in a group to help meet a particular goal (Juban, 2003). That goal can be a group goal or an
organizational goal. Once upon a time, it was assumed that leaders were born, rather than made. This was true in more than
one sense. Hunters and gathers chose leaders who were big and strong, because they were better able to lead prehistoric tribes during very dangerous times. In later centuries, as humans
moved from hunting and gathering into agrarian communities, leadership was a generational situation, typically passed down within families. Very rarely could the serfs aspire to any kind of landed gentry
leadership. Monarchies, as well, were famous for passing down their crowns between generations. This is what we know today as "traits" theory; in other words, the idea that leaders are
leaders because they have the leadership qualities from birth (McNamara, 2008). Its only in the 20th century that those studying leaders and
leadership realize that, perhaps, leadership isnt so much an inherited trait as its one that can, perhaps, be learned. In other words, while a propensity toward leadership might be inherent
