the pinstripes, complacently puffing at his cigar as he saw the profits rolling in from sales of fuel and oil and other commodities. This might have been a guy who,
at one point, worked the oil rigs and was familiar with what it took to get oil from the ground. His philosophy was that if he worked hard, so would
everyone else. This was also a man who likely had his finger in every pie in the business. These days, that vision
of the oil executive has changed. Todays oil executive is likely to be a graduate from a business school. Hes likely not to puff on cigars, or even smoke cigarettes,
for that matter. Chances are pretty good that he hasnt been within striking distance of an oil rig. And chances are also pretty good that he might be a she.
But todays oil executives face an interesting set of challenges that the oil executive of the 1950s never would have dreamed of.
Challenges ranging from unstable regions to a dwindling supply in the face of demand from emerging markets mean the oil executives dont have time to watch the profits rolling in
-- if, indeed, there are any profits to find. In this paper, well examine literature pertaining to the oil executive, and his
(or her) growth during the various periods of petroleum usage. Even with scarce literature on hand specifically about oil executives, we can take the generous amount of leadership literature and
