all-knowing, all-powerful being. When that leader issued orders and directives, it was anticipated that employees would obey, with out question. This type of classical leadership style (which borrows from the military), worked well in an industrial economy, in which quotas and quality were essential and in which business was thought of in terms of assembly lines and output-per-hour statistics. However, as we are moving away from a manufacturing-based economy and toward the more intangible service and "knowledge-based" economy, the classic form of "when-I-say-jump-you-ask-how-high" leadership is also becoming obsolete. In addition, the more diverse workforces are becoming, the more different types of leadership styles and methods need to be examined. What is taking its place in the modern organization, however, has been debated by much of the leadership literature in recent years. Are leaders born? Or are they made? Bawany (2008), among others, points out that with global competition and rapidly shifting external environments, organizations are shifting from the hierarchal structure, in which everything is kicked up and down a personnel chain of command, to a more linear structure that helps spread the wealth - in other words, which empowers employees at a lower level to be decision-makers. The theory behind a flatter organization is that this is the type of organization better able to respond to a rapidly shifting environment. But what type of leader is ideal for this kind of organization? Bawany is adamant that the best way to lead and motivate in todays knowledge-based economy is through a transitional coaching approach.
