What isnt, however, is leading and managing. Alan Kent, in 2005, wrote that while leading and managing are two different activities, neither can work effectively without the other. Taking it
one step further, leadership and management both are necessary for strategic change. Before continuing on this vein, it would be helpful to understand leadership and management. Leaders are the big-picture
folks, the ones who have the vision and the ones who see beyond the current road. Because theyre the visionaries, theyre also the motivators. They can encourage people to see
the vision and encourage them to understand what things will be like once that vision becomes a reality. Managers, on the other hand, are the ones who take the step-by-step
methods to get from point A (the vision) to point B (the reality. Managing involves rallying the troops, and giving them specific assignments and setting smaller objectives. Managers are the
in-the-trenches people who manage the daily work to ensure that the leaders goals are reached. By their very definition, management and leadership are not interchangeable, as many people would like
to believe. Successful organizations, however, have people that are both. They have leaders who know how to manage and managers who are able to lead. What then, are the roles
of leadership and management when it comes to strategic change? In a nut shell, the roles of both are to ensure the change goes smoothly, with a minimum of resentment,
