orientation and both genders. In companies in the U.S., for example, leaders dont blink an eyelid if he or she is overseeing a collection of blacks, whites, Asians, men, women,
youth and so on. These leaders arent concerned about color or age, but rather, how they can get everyone on the same page to reach the same goal.
However, in a country such as South Africa, diverse workforces are still somewhat of a novelty. Twenty years ago, apartheid still was an issue, with
complete separation the norm. Though apartheid on a political level has been abolished, change tends to be slow to trickle through the workforce, as companies and business leaders figure out
what, exactly, the cessation of barriers means. Among younger members of the workforce, perhaps, the mingling of ethnic groups isnt an issue. However, those who are middle age, on both
sides of the color line, remember all too well what it was like to have a workforce that was either all white or all black. Furthermore, there have been tensions
between the British South Africans and the Boers/Afrikaaners, dating back from the 19th century. Therefore, todays South African business leader must not only try to pull his or her team
together to be on the same page; he/she also will likely have to deal with latent hostilities from all three groups. In this
paper, well discuss how leadership can influence diversity and help a company achieve a successful diversity strategy. Well focus our literature search both on leaderships role in diversity and the
