between Ximena and Rodrigo one gains an understanding of how very real a concept, honor, was and how it shaped the everyday lives of those governed by it. Rodrigos exile
and the consequent events that follow only serve to expose the underlying political problems which Castro, himself, were experiencing in the country. The idea of Rodrigos youth as opposed to
that of the King further then notion of national honor, religious symbolism, and Castros hope for his homeland. In Bellvis work Rodrigo and Ximenas love for one another is
complicated by the fact that Rodrigo has killed Ximenas father. Honor dictates that she avenge her father. Here, the theme of love and honor not being compatible is offered. In
fact, the idea of honor drives this story. Both Ximena and Rodrigos fathers quarrel and in so doing Rodrigos father is insulted by Ximenas father. Since Rodrigos father is too
elderly to defend himself (again shaming him) he sends his son Rodrigo to restore his fathers honor by killing Ximenas father. This, then, creates the tension between Ximena and Rodrigo
as they begin to realize that they are in love with one another. REY: Ya lo espero.
