an objective and clear fashion. There has been a good deal of criticism against the media in recent years that has demonstrated that television, magazine and newspaper reporters are not
doing a good job of being objective. Some critics charge the media with being overly liberal. Others claim that the media is actually an elite group of people controlled by
the government that broadcasts and/or prints what the government wants it to. This is not to say that the government controls the media - but rather, that the media many
times does not dig deeper below the governments statements to actually determine the truth. This paper will focus on how objective the media actually is, and will examine its role
in fairly reporting the news. The primary role of the media overall is to communicate facts, figures and other interesting news to
the population. And the primary definition of communication, according to the Institute for Media and Communications Management at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland is when a message is
conceived, then encoded (i.e., translated into a signal or series of signals), then transmitted via a particular medium to a receiver (Watson/Hill). The receiver then decodes and interprets the message,
returning a signal in some way that the message has or has not been understood (Watson/Hill). The purpose of written communication is to send this information, through use of words,
typically in print format such as newspapers or magazines (and the Internet). The purpose of verbal communication is to talk about the same information, rather than put it down on
