be the first full-length novel to be written. It was certainly the first longest novel, numbering something like 1,000 pages. The author,
in true Japanese form, ends up following the customs of her time by referring to individuals indirectly, either by using nicknames or titles to refer to them. Because of this,
we dont know the true name of the Akashi Lady, but we do come to learn a great deal about her as Genji serves his exile.
This is certainly the case with Akashi Lady, or Lady of Akashi. Akashi, in the book, is a seaside resort where Genji has his exile. The
lady he meets there (Akashi Lady) is the daughter of a former provincial governor who has become a priest. She also becomes one of Genjis wives (her daughter is ultimately
adopted by Murasaki and eventually becomes an empress). But to note Akashi Lady in the book, you wouldnt know that this woman would become the mother of an eventual empress.
She is described in the book as shy, a lady with "no ambitions for herself," and no thought (or desire, for that
matter) of making any kind of respectable marriage. Yet she somehow manages to allow Genji into her heart. The lady, however, is
described by Genji as "an aristocrat" in the way in which she carries herself and she speaks. But the problem here is that she doesnt speak (and this tends to
irritate Genji) "Even ladies so wellborn that they were sheltered from sudden visitors usually tried to make conversation when the visitor was Genji," the book notes, as Genji was considered
