Furthermore, the National Labor Relations Board has become a target of Congressional Republicans (Nichols, 2012). Beyond political rhetoric, however, there are stories of frustrated management that cant fire lackluster employees because of potential union backlash. Furthermore, its intimated that in a 24/7 global economy, unions rules of specific work hours and time off is eroding any kind of competitiveness that the U.S. can offer. Which side is correct? The tension between collective bargaining labor and management has always been palpable, as both groups tend to take an "us versus them" stance. Even terms such as "collective bargaining," "workers rights" and "strike" have pretty negative connotations. This, then, is the main problem of unions in the United States. Corporate management is convinced that these groups bring outrageous demands to the table. Unions, on the other hand, point out that companies earning record-breaking profits should at least share the largess of those profits with employees. Because neither side is willing to budge one inch, the result is a quagmire. At the dawn of the industrial age, before the advent of labor unions, management could take advantage of employees by providing low pay, no benefits and long working hours with little, if any, time off. But when employees gathered to bargain with management, they found they had more leverage than when approaching management separately.
