Essay / Research Paper Abstract
12 pages in length. The extent to which environmental destruction is occurring upon a global scale is both grand and far-reaching; that the devastation from greenhouse gas emissions – mainly carbon dioxide - poses a particularly imminent threat to the future survival of societies worldwide. As a means by which to forestall this continued degradation, the Kyoto Treaty – originated from the 1997 conference – originally sought to legally mandate emission reduction over the next ten years of 5.2% lower than 1990 amounts for industrialized nations; however, this figure was quickly 'watered down' to two percent when the world's largest polluter – the United States – flatly refused to cooperate. Emitting thirty-six percent of all global pollution in 1990, it came as quite a surprise with President Bush announced that America would not comply. The writer briefly follows the progress of the Kyoto Treaty from inception to current day. Bibliography lists 18 sources and four graphs.

Bush announced that America would not comply.i Among the myriad objectives the Kyoto Treaty seeks to achieve, the following represent key points: * Finance - funding for poor
countries to develop new technology * Mechanisms - tough systems in each country to verify and report carbon emissions * Sinks - heavily forested countries can use their
tree sinks to offset greenhouse gases * Compliance - countries that fail to keep to their greenhouse gas reduction targets should face legally binding consequences.ii II. GLOBAL WARMING
The entire reason why there is a need for the Kyoto Treaty is due to global warming, a detrimental increase in temperatures throughout the world that, while seemingly insignificant in
degrees, will irreparably alter the earths environment and weather patterns. As the world continues to succumb to the effects of global warming, some areas of the planet have been
discovered to be significantly more susceptible to the detrimental affects than others. For the most part, underdeveloped nations stand to suffer a much worse outcome than their developed counterparts,
inasmuch as the change in climate will directly influence the manner in which their environment reacts. Such countries as India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the
