examining the unwelcome global occurrence as it relates to Kuwaits problems and challenges. II. FENDING OFF TERRORISM Kuwaits long and unwanted relationship with terrorism has been instrumental in establishing
an alliance with one of the worlds greatest super powers, a relationship that was born out of a mutual desire to thwart the continuing escapades of a particularly prolific terrorist.
The United States and Kuwait commenced their association when the American consulate opened in 1951; ten years later, when Kuwait was just entering into its independence, this status was
brought up to reflect embassy standing. Fully supportive of Kuwaits sovereignty, security, and independence, "as well as its multilateral diplomatic efforts to build greater cooperation among the GCC countries"
(Profile), the United States has served as a beacon of peace when it has come to Kuwaits desirous attempts to quell terrorist activity. This mutual alliance against terrorism intensified when
maritime protection became necessary during 1987, an augmentation that served to increase even more after Kuwait was attacked by Iraq. Clearly, without Americas forceful presence during both Desert Shield
and Desert Storm, one might readily surmise how Kuwait would not have experienced the extent of protection with regard to Iraqs military fury. The United States was instrumental in
following through with UN Security Council demands that "Iraq withdraw from Kuwait and its authorization of the use of force, if necessary, to remove Iraqi forces from the occupied country"
