antagonist is Kurtz. He is seen as the embodiment of evil and corruption and serves as the core element of the entire story as the character of Marlow moves closer
and closer into contact with Kurtz. He is the epitome of all that is dark in the novel. However, when one looks at the story from a different perspective, perhaps
a perspective not often examined, one can well see how Kurtz is the true hero of the story. The following paper examines this perspective. Kurtz as Hero in
The Heart of Darkness As mentioned, this story is primarily seen through the eyes of Marlow as he moves closer to coming in contact with his mission of finding and
retrieving Kurtz. He travels down the river in Africa and encounters many negative conditions and realities along the way. He is innocent in many ways and ultimately one could claim
that he has no real essence or solidity to his character. He is na?ve and cannot truly be seen as a hero for he does nothing in any grand manner.
He learns, that is true, and he becomes a deeper and more reflective individual who understands that there is a darkness in all mankind. But, in truth he does nothing
that would make him a hero. He does not make powerful decisions and he does not truly step outside any realm within himself or society. Kurtz is meant to
be seen as a dark and evil and corrupt individual. He is touted as being persuasive, intelligent, and very sophisticated in many ways. But he has gone against the laws
