in his most celebrated novel, Slaughterhouse-Five. Discussion This paper is not concerned with recapping the story except as it aids in the evaluation of Vonneguts technique. In fact, the story of Billy Pilgrim is well known, since the book is a staple of most literature courses. Lets begin with two obvious observations: the protagonists name and the main conceit of the novel, time-travel. The protagonist is called "Billy Pilgrim," and the name has a double meaning at the very least. First, it is a reference to the Medieval allegory by Paul Bunyan that was first published in 1678, and which has never been out of print (Forrest). The story, which is the tale of Christians life (he is an "Everyman" character, meaning he stands for all mankind), is told as a journey, and although the concept of life as a journey "actually pre-dated the Christian era, it was from the start adopted to become one of the most potent metaphors in Christian thought, especially when wayfaring is combined, as here, with its cognate image of warfaring" (Forrest). The structure of the novel is a "romance and adventure" in which Christian, seeking salvation, progresses from "one discernible city to another and a process which has a definable beginning, a middle, and an end" (Forrest). Not only that, but the initial scene of the book sets reveals the main point, when Christian cries, "What shall I do to be saved?" (Forrest). Thus, Billy Pilgrim in Vonneguts story calls up echoes from a work written hundreds of years earlier, but he is asking the same question, though slightly differently: what does he have to do to find meaning in his life?
