Clockwork Orange (1971), to name just a few, demonstrate the diversity of his creative genius (Magills Survey of Cinema). However, the film with which Kubrick is most associated is 2001:
A Space Odyssey (1968), which Variety magazine lists as one of the top fifty moneymaking films of all time (Magills Survey of Cinema). The film opens with a sequence
set in the prehistoric past and features a relatively peaceful group of apes, living with other animals in a barren landscape. One morning the colony awakens to find a large,
black rectangular monolith has materialized during the night. After touching the monolith, the leader of the apes develops the capacity to use bones and sticks as tools and weapons (Magills
Survey of Cinema). A flying chip of bone that flies into the air is blended into a cut that focuses in on a spacecraft in the year 2001 (Magills Survey
of Cinema). This spacecraft is carrying Dr. Heywood Floyd on a secret mission to inspect a discovery on the moon. A monolith identical to the one in the
opening sequence has been found buried beneath the surface of the moon. While Floyd and his colleagues are standing in front of the monolith, having their pictures taken, the sun
strikes it for the first time, which triggers a powerful radio transmission that is targeted at the planet Jupiter. The US decides to send a nine-month expedition to Jupiter in
