the ways I inspire a shared vision is by modeling the way through discussions and conversations. Often, the vision may be contrary to traditional practices, such as hours of work.
When possible, I offer employees the option to work the hours that are most convenient for them. This both challenges the normal process while it enables or empowers others. Encouraging
the heart is easy to do when I recognize and acknowledge both effort and accomplishments. Kouzes and Posner (2007) identify the four most admired characteristics in leaders as being honest,
forward-looking, inspiring and competent. I would also include integrity, high energy, courage and a desire to help others. Excellent leaders need to have a great deal of energy and they
need to have the courage to buck the system. They need to act with integrity which includes ethics. I favor transformational and servant leadership both of which require a sincere
and prevailing concern for others. People know whether or not the leader really cares about them. Values are inherent in Kouzes and Posners (2007) leadership practices. My values include
honesty, integrity, trust, hard work and acting in an ethical manner, among others. These are all necessary if the leader cares about people and if they are going to be
committed to their vision. Values guide and direct our actions. For instance, when faced with an ethical issue, it will be my values that drive me forward, i.e., values drive
and guide my decisions. The themes identified by Kouzes and Posner (2007) are: a caring attitude about people, high performance standards, and a sense of uniqueness and pride. It
