Michael Steinhardt Gallery dedicated to Greek Art
of the sixth century BC. It is one of the only
complete early Kouroi outside of Greece to be
seen, and perhaps the only one in America.
Certainly, it is one of the most important and rare
works of the art in the Metropolitan Greek
collection. It epitomizes the early Archaic style,
with its static posture, one foot forward, arms
held tightly by the side, gaze straight ahead.

- Part I When we look at this marble sculpture from the archaic period of Greek sculpture and see it as an isolated piece, it does not appear to have
the same drama it merits, as if we see it in the first step, or part I of a sculptural process. This is the beginning of the idea of
the relationship in Greek thought of the symbolization of the state through the perfection of the individual - or at least the physical representation of the individual. Rigid. The figure appears
rigid and linear. Although there is definite muscle structure shown it is in stiff chiseled lines. We certainly can tell it is a young male human, but it
barely seems to have broken out of its marble rectangle. Notice how there is little if any natural bending at the elbows and the knees. If you look carefully
