a novel, it is all too real. It begins with the first Chapter entitled Summer 1987. Many probably remember that summer well. It was at the tail end of one
of the best economic booms of all time, and shortly before a dismal October would come and the stock market would crash. Of course, while wealthy or even middle class
kids were dealing with the long faces of their parents or family friends, Pharoah and Lafeyette had no such luxury as they explored the streets of a dangerous territory.
The work is a good representation of at least these boys experiences and while perhaps not indicative of the experience of a whole generation, one could say that they represented
what was negative during the time period and always. In fact, this piece of writing transcends time, as it seems these poor regions were here always. Chicago and other large
cities always had its problems and this is one story, of many, but it is told with a great deal of reverence not only for childhood, but for the city
of Chicago itself. Yes, Chicago was broken but it was not completely dismantled. Part of the colorful scenery indicative of the life in Chicago comes form Pharoahs keen observations of
the citys skyline and the awesome view, as well as one distinct butterfly. Indeed, despite the dismal surroundings, Pharoah has time to stop and smell the roses. The writers
skill is apparent as he describes the sighting of this butterfly: "A black-and-yellow butterfly wove effortlessly through the wind. Fixed on its dance, Pharoah stared silently for minutes..." (Kotlowitz 4).
