There are, however, many incidents and historical events that illustrate Japan has often dominated and controlled Korea and Koreans. The following paper examines some of the history of Korea and Japan and then analyzes what form of literary theory would best describe the relationship. Korea and Japans History The struggle for national identity goes way back in Korean and Japanese history. One author first presents us with the story of a woman, Takanono Niigasa, who was the daughter of Korea. She was betrothed to a Japanese prince, a man who became emporeror in 770 (Wehrfritz; Takayama; Lee, 2002; 24). Her son became leader and as such the history indicates he was clearly half Korean. However, "for centuries Japans insistence on its sacred kokutai, or national essence, has obscured that legacy--along with a mountain of historical, cultural and genealogical evidence that demonstrates how much the country owes to its East Asian neighbor" (Wehrfritz; Takayama; Lee, 2002; 24). It is such information that indicates the clear cut identity held by Koreans and by Japanese is not all that clear cut. "The denial of that shared history continues to bedevil relations between the two countries" (Wehrfritz; Takayama; Lee, 2002; 24). Many Koreans claim that Japans insistence that they have no relationship with Korea is much like selective amnesia, which is further supported by arguments concerning how Japan has shown an "inability to own up to the atrocities committed during its brutal annexation of the peninsula, its exploitation of forced laborers and the use of comfort women to provide sex for Japanese troops" (Wehrfritz; Takayama; Lee, 2002; 24).
