named Rubashov. The work begins after the party has secured him and charged him with being a traitor after a vigorous scene that depicts his capture. It is rather heart
wrenching and pathetic, as this man is still dedicated to the Party. The pathetic nature of this mans existence is expressed in his behavior after capture. The author writes: "Rubashov
walked up and down in the cell, from the door to the window and back, between bunk, wash-basin and bucket, six and a half steps there, six and a half
steps back. At the door he turned to the right, at the window to the left: It was an old prison habit; if one did not change the direction of
the turn one rapidly became dizzy" (1984, 12). Rubashovs relationship with the Communist Party is bittersweet. A revolutionary in his own right and supporter of Communism, he is unjustly accused
of crimes and submits to the party. While he at first was significantly aligned with the position of the party and was one of its greatest supporters, the party would
ironically turn on him. One can see by the description above that he had suffered much for the cause. Rubashovs life is emblematic of the party as it was once
again, ironically a life that was dedicated to the cause that tormented him. In some way, this is symbolic of the partys promise and delivery. The promise of communism has
always been a paradise. There was to be no competition, no problems and everyone was supposed to be happy as a result. In the end, there would be sharing and
happiness and an end to the cruelty of class warfare. Yet, as exemplified by this novel, and real life, communism turns out to be an ideology entrenched in promise that
